Kambô

Kambô is a secretion derived from the giant leaf frog-phyllomedusa bicolor, found in the Amazonian rainforest. It has been used as an ancestral medicine by indigenous tribes in the Amazon for thousands of years. Since its discovery by scientists, the secretions have been researched and found to have rich bioactive peptides and neuropeptides that can be supportive for one’s physical and mental health-swinging our body back toward homeostasis. Though it has been used as a “medicine” by indigenous tribes, it is important to note that we do not consider this a medicine. We view this as a powerful supplement and believe a healthy lifestyle will support the lasting effects.

What is Kambô?

Research at Queens University in Belfast recently won a prestigious award for his ground-breaking work with cancer and Kambo.
The first bioactive peptide produced by a Phyllomedusa was discovered in 1966 and since then, the discoveries of these biopeptides have grown exponentially to the present time.
— A. Varela

The peptides found in Kambô appear to perform hormone-like tasks, while others provide support for vital cellular processes (learning, memory, metabolism of certain neurotransmitters). Others appear to have a potent effect on the gastrointestinal muscles, gastric and pancreatic secretions and blood circulation. The peptides have been found to increase stimulation of the adrenal cortex, pituitary gland and reproductive system. Others possess potent analgesic powers. Some also appear to be able to inhibit the growth of tumor cells. Anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-protozoal peptides are also found.

Peptides found in Kambô:

Phyllomedusin – such as tachykinins (which also act as neuropeptides) – produce contraction at the smooth muscle level and increase secretions of the entire gastrointestinal tract such as the salivary glands, stomach, small and large intestine, pancreas and gallbladder. These are the main parts responsible for the deep purge that can be produced by the administration of Kambô.

Phyllokinin and Phyllomedusins – both are potent vasodilators, increasing the permeability of the blood-brain barrier both for their own access as well as for that of other active peptides. Within this family are the medusins, which also have anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties.

Caeruleins and Sauvagines – They are peptides with chains of 40 amino acids with myotropic properties on the smooth muscles, producing a contraction of the colon and urinary bladder. They produce a drop in blood pressure accompanied by tachycardia. They stimulate the adrenal cortex and pituitary gland, contributing to greater sensory perception and increased resistance. Both peptides possess a great analgesic power, contributing to the increase of physical strength, the capacity to confront physical pain, stress, disease and diminish the symptoms of fatigue.

Dermorphin and deltorphin – These are small peptides composed of 7 amino acids. They are selective agonists of the opiate delta receptors, 4,000 times more potent than morphine and 40 times more than the endogenous endorphins.

Adenoregulins – discovered in the 90s by John Daly’s team at the National Institute of Health in the United States. Adenoregulin works on the human body through the adenosine receptors, a fundamental component throughout all human cellular fuel. These receptors may offer a target for the treatment of depression, stroke and cognitive loss diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and also Parkinson’s.

Antimicrobial peptides: Dermaseptins, including adenoregulins (with 33 amino acids), plasticines and philloseptins form part of a family of a broad spectrum of antimicrobial peptides involved in the defense of frogs’ bare skin against microbial invasion. These are the first vertebrate peptides that show lethal effects against filamentous fungi responsible for severe opportunistic infections which accompany the immunodeficiency syndrome and the use of immunosuppressive agents. They also show lethal effects against a broad spectrum of bacteria both large+ and large-, fungi, yeasts and protozoa. Several years of research carried out at the University of Paris have shown that peptides Dermaseptin B2 and B3 are effective in killing certain types of cancer cells. Research at Queens University in Belfast recently won a prestigious award for his ground-breaking work with cancer and Kambo.

Bradykinins – such as phyllokinins and tryptophilins. They are peptides with structure and properties similar to human bradykinin. They are important sources of scientific study as they are hypotensive and due to producing vasodilation, contraction of the non-vascular smooth muscle, increase vascular permeability, also related to the mechanism of inflammatory pain.

Bombesins – these peptides stimulate the secretion of hydrochloric acid by acting on the G cells of the stomach, regardless of the pH of the medium. They also increase pancreatic secretion, intestinal myoelectric activity and smooth muscle contractibility.

Ceruleins – Stimulate gastric, bile and pancreatic secretions, and certain smooth muscle.

Tryptophilins – are neuropeptides consisting of 4 to 14 amino acids, which are opening up new perspectives on how the human brain works.

The world of medicine is a wild place…especially when we start to dig into how things become regulated by the FDA.

There are currently 70 Kambo patents, mostly in the United States (surprise!). Like many natural ways of healing, the internet likes to instill fear. It is important that you do your own research, listen to your own body and talk to real people who have had real life experience with this powerful offering.

The video below is a great resource featuring Jason Fellows, founder of Tribal Detox (who I trained with).

I personally work with Kambô on a regular basis and have served it to a variety of people in a trauma-informed manner.

Let’s schedule a call if you are interested in learning more…

The Process:

Consultation

Schedule a consultation to ensure this is a right fit for you.

Waiver & Intake

After your consultation you will receive a waiver and intake form that you must fill out. We take safety seriously and there are some contraindications that we want to rule out prior to serving Kambô.

Scheduling

These sessions are approximately 90 mins long. Though the Kambô is only on your skin for 20 mins, we will need sufficient time for prep, administration and rest. Once you have been scheduled, you will receive a preparatory e-mail. NOTE: If you do not follow these guidelines, your appointment will be canceled and you will not be served.

Ceremony Day

My work is ceremonial in nature. When you arrive, I will have the space set up for you and I may offer some opening words, a smudge and/or a song. You are welcome to bring an offering to place on the altar that you can take back home with you. sessions are mostly administered at a private location.

You will also have the option of receiving other jungle plant medicines such as Sananga which helps relax the body prior to session and Hapé to support you to ground and close the ceremony. These are optional.

PLEASE NOTE: Because I am a trauma-informed mental health practitioner who has been working in the field for over a decade, I take this approach in how I serve Kambô. If you have never experienced it and/or have a comprimised system, we will take it slow and serve small amounts. It is important that we take care of our bodies and introduce new information at digestible paces.

I do not believe that you have to purge to receive benefits…

I have both seen and experienced that truth for myself.

I give deep gratitude to Jason & Kelly of Tribal Detox who hold great integrity in how they teach and train practitioners. It is an honor to have them here in the San Luis Valley with me, where the story of the frog spirit resides.

I thank those beautiful amphibians for courting me…

I bow to Creator for offering powerful medicines that help us heal. May we always remember to live in right relationship with your creations. To Mother Earth, the frogs, the jungles and all those who ethically harvest this Kambô, THANK YOU. Gracias.

This medicine has truly been an ally for me in my life and I recognize the privilege I have to hold space for people’s healing.

I am purely a conduit, not the healer. I humbly share this offering, but the work and integration is up to you.

I have been a Kambô practitioner since the start of 2025. I have known about this Earth based offering for a long time and knew that the medicine would find me if it was right for me. I don’t believe in courting energies, I believe they court us. After all, it is the frog spirit of the San Luis Valley that I believe has continually called me back to this place.

The amphibians have been speaking to me for a long time…

After getting COVID back to back, I found myself struggling with chronic fatigue and nervous system issues that I didn’t have, prior to falling ill with the virus. I was getting severe outbreaks of cold sores every three months-which was very abnormal and frustrating. If you know, you know!

During an plant medicine ceremony I had a couple years back, images of frogs became a center piece for my journey. After processing what that meant for me, I became curious about trying Kambô for myself.

After receiving my first dose of Kambô with Jason & Kelly, I slept for an entire day, but the next…I was very energized! The second time I received it from a friend, I released the color blue out of my bile and was fascinated. Some research shows that this color can signify dyes from surgeries being in my gut, which aligned with what a functional medicine practitioner had seen in an assessment-I had a double clavicle surgery I had done in 2021.

After my first few doses, I knew this was my personal medicine. I trained so I could offer this medicine to myself and after learning just how intricate and powerful these peptides are, I can’t keep it for me. I have served dozens of people over the last year and have seen profound impacts.
